Mozy – FREE Online Backup Solution

October 9th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in Online Storage

2gb FREE backup!

Mozy is a fantastic piece of software I discovered around a year or so ago. Quick to set up you simply download the software and select what files you would like to backup. Then just leave it to Mozy which will backup new files, changed files etc without any further user input. So what makes it so special?

  • Open/locked file support: Mozy will back up your documents whether they’re open or closed.
  • 128-bit SSL encryption: The same technology used by banks secures your data during the backup process.
  • 448-bit Blowfish encryption: Secures your files while in storage, providing peace of mind that your private data is safe from hackers.
  • Automatic: Schedule the times to back up and MozyHome does the rest.
  • New and changed file detection: MozyHome finds and saves the smallest changes.
  • Backs up Outlook files: Disaster-proof email protection.
  • Block-level incremental backup: After the initial backup, MozyHome only backs up files that have been added or changed, making subsequent backups lightning fast.
Of course Mozy does suggest alternatives to the $4.95 per month unlimited backup;

Alternatives to MozyHome

  • Burn a new CD or DVD every Sunday night and store it at your brother-in-law’s office.
  • Pay $200/year for an online backup service that uses old, mediocre software.
  • Buy a $200 external hard drive and hope your office doesn’t burn down.
  • Do nothing and don’t worry about backup. (We suggest closing your eyes, plugging your ears and repeating “I’m in my happy place, I’m in my happy place.”)
  • Run a cron job of rsync, gzip and mcrypt piped over ssh to your friend’s server over his DSL line.
Great for Mac and Windows alike!
Try it and you’ll never look back! if you have that horrible moment where your hard drive fails you can either back up from the website or request a DVD with all your files on. Why not have 10% off the MozyHome package on me?
Just type in SAVE10 at checkout and save 10% on a MozyHome Unlimited annual or biennial subscription!

Dropbox – Sync Your Life for FREE

Dropbox
Dropbox is a great little piece of software I stumbled accross whilst hunting for backup/storage solutions.

My current setup is that I have a laptop that I do the main editing on, accounts etc and a static desktop computer which acts as a large hub for all my photographs and data. Whilst this is all backed up nice an neatly, moving files between the systems and for easy access can be confusing and frustrating to get a memory card, transfer to it, then go to the other computer and move the files back, etc.

This is where Dropbox comes in. A little bit of software that creates a special folder on your computer and automatically uploads anything you drop into it. This same, special folder is placed on another computer or several computers and when one updates with new items, the others do too in a simple upload-download motion.

That’s really all there is to it, simple technology that works to make sharing information a lot easier! you can also invite contacts to download your folders or set up just single folders for them i.e. for a client which you can drop just their proofs into?

2GB is given free which I personally think is very generous and ideal for moving a good chunk of information around, though it does rely on the internet and so download/upload speeds may make it better for some users than others (i.e. those on high speed broadband)

If this isn’t enough they offer upgrades to add more space to your account for a very reasonable $4.99 per month for 10 $9.99 for 50gb and just $19.99 for 100gb (great for big companies).

What’s not to like? give it  go by visiting the website getdropbox.com here
